All about Hanukkah Toys
What Hanukkah Toy is the most Traditional gift for a Child?
Going back many years the most favorite of all Hanukkah toys was the Dreidel, which is more commonly known with its Hebrew name Sevivon. The Dreidel is a small wooden toy similar to a 4 sided top, with 4 Hebrew letters on it, one letter on each side. The letters on this Hanukkah toy are an acronym for the Hebrew words, נס גדול היה שם. Which means in Hebrew "a great miracle took place there", refering to the miracle that took place at the time of Hanukkah.
Children and sometimes adults will play long hours with this Hanukkah Toy called Dreidel. The rules of the game are that for each letter that one gets while turning the Top, a certain amount of money needs to be dispensed to the bank. Then certain letters get the person to receive a part or all of the money in the bank.
Many families have the tradition that at least once on Hanukkah the entire family will gather and play with this Hanukkah Toy.
The dreidel Hanukkah game is played to commemorate a toy created by the Jewish people to camouflage the fact that they were studying Torah, which was outlawed by the Greeks. The Jews would gather in caves to study, posting one of them at a lookout to alert the group in the case when and if Greek soldiers are seen in the region. If soldiers were spotted, the Jews would hide their scrolls and spin tops, so the Greeks thought they were playing, not studying the Bible or Talmud.
Any other tradition to treat the Kids on Hanukkah?
Besides giving Hanukkah toys, there is also the famous tradition of giving Hanukkah gelt (money in Yiddish). The reason for giving this Hanukkah gelt is to enhance their enjoyment of the Hanukkah Holiday. The amount is usually in small coins, although grandparents or other relatives may sometimes give larger sums as an official Hanukkah gift. In Israel, Hanukkah gelt is known as dmei Hanukkah.
From this Tradition of giving Hanukkah money, there emerged a full line of Judaica Hanukkah toys featuring coins. Chocolate producers picked up on this Chanukkah tradition and started producing Chocolate gelt.
From our experiance of all the years, people will buy Hanukkah toys for the Kids and include in it Hanukkah Chocolate Gelt and some Dreidels.
