All about the Rosh Hashanah Honey Dish

Why is a Honey Dish associated with Rosh Hashanah?

The Honey Bowl is associated with Rosh Hashanah, since there is the famous custom of eating a apple dipped in honey on Rosh Hashanah.

What is the reason for eating a apple dipped in honey on Rosh Hashanah?

The custom to eat apples and honey is to symbolize a "sweet new year". Many people also have the custom to dip the Challah (braided bread eaten at Jewish festivals) in honey at this time of year for the same reason. People will place the Honey Dish on the table through out the Rosh Hashanah meal to accommodate the apple dipping into honey and for the dipping of the Challah.

Are there any other customs to perform at Rosh Hashanah meals?

Depending on the community and local custom, there are some other traditional foods to be eaten on Rosh Hashanah. Some people will eat meat from the head (to symbolize that with G-D's will may we all be masters. Other symbolic foods eaten on Rosh Hashanah are dates, black-eyed beans, leek and spinach, all of these above mentioned foods are written in the Talmud as a custom to eat on Rosh Hashanah in order to symbolize a sweet and healthy New Year. But as said, all these Rosh Hashanah foods depends on the origin of the people in the community and their customs. Pomegranates are also eaten according to many traditions. The custom of dipping the apple into the Honey Dish, although it is a late Ashkenazic addition, it became with time almost universally accepted. Also most people will eat round challah at their Rosh Hashanah meal to symbolize the cycle of the year.
