What is a dreidel?

The dreidel is a 4 sided top used in a game which is typically played by Jewish chidren during Hanukkah. Hanukkah, or Festival of Lights is Jewish holiday celebrated around late November to late December. The name comes from the Yiddish word "dreydl" which means to turn or to spin. Each side of the dreidel has a corresponding letter of the Hebrew alphabet written on it: Nun, Gimel, Hei and Shin. Together, these letters form the acronym N.G.H.S. (Nes Gadol Hayah Sham) which translates to "a great miracle happened there". Dreidels sold in Israel have the letters N.G.S.P. (Nes Gadol Hayah Po) which means "A great miracle happened here".

How to play dreidel.

The dreidel game can be played with any number of people greater than 2. Players will need "gelt", which can be money or pieces of chocolate candy coins. The players need to put a piece into the center "pot" at the start of every round. Each player will get a chance to spin the dreidel. When the top stops spinning, it will fall on one side. The letter that comes up on top will determine how much the player gets from teh pot. Nun means the player gets nothing. Gimel means the player takes everything in the pot. Hei, the player gets only half of what is in the pot. Shin means the player loses and instead adds a piece of his share to the pot!
